Shader capability comparison

An honest, feature-by-feature look at four Minecraft graphics stacks. No stack does everything — hover any mark for the detail behind it.

Rendering capabilities of BetterRTX, RTX (Standard), Vibrant Visuals and Java labPBR shaderpacks, compared feature by feature.

Strengths & trade-offs

BetterRTX

Bedrock · Path-traced

Strengths

  • Reference-quality path-traced GI, shadows & reflections
  • POM with self-shadowing, subsurface scattering & physical depth of field
  • Configurable tone-mapping and per-preset colour grading
  • Free and community-driven, with one-click presets

Trade-offs

  • Requires an RT-capable GPU
  • Bedrock / Windows only — replaces the stock RTX renderer
  • Shader source is closed

RTX (Standard)

Bedrock · Path-traced

Strengths

  • Official, stable, zero setup
  • True path-traced GI, shadows, reflections & water

Trade-offs

  • No POM, subsurface scattering or depth of field
  • Fixed tone-map — no colour grading or presets
  • Requires an RT-capable GPU

Vibrant Visuals

Bedrock · Deferred

Strengths

  • Runs on any device — phones, consoles, no RT GPU
  • Official, a huge leap over classic lighting
  • PBR, colour grading, volumetric fog & bloom

Trade-offs

  • Rasterised — no true ray or path tracing
  • No parallax depth or depth of field
  • Shadow maps & screen-space reflections only

Java Shaders (labPBR)

Java · Shaderpacks

Strengths

  • Mature standard with hundreds of packs
  • Deep per-pack customisation
  • Strong POM, colour grading & volumetrics; PTGI options

Trade-offs

  • Java Edition only — a different platform
  • Quality & features vary wildly by pack
  • Needs Iris / OptiFine to set up
